Mission Statement
The Mahaska County Secondary Road Department strives
to provide and maintain the safest and highest quality
network of roads and bridges possible with our resources.
General Information
The Secondary Road Department is in charge of construction
and maintenance for all of the county roadways and
bridges. This includes all roads not located within
the corporate limits of any town, or highways on the
State system such as US63 and Iowa 163 and 92. County
roads include 106 miles paved, 833 miles granular
surfaced and 50 miles of dirt roadway. There are a
total of 223 bridges within the county that are inspected
and maintained.
The Department has 31 employees with 25 assigned
to the Maintenance Division and 6 to the Construction
Division. The Code of Iowa requires that the Board
of Supervisors appoint a Registered Professional Engineer
as department head. The Engineer, along with the Assistant
Engineer, Road Supervisor and Office Manager, directs
both the construction and maintenance activities.
